I work for Martin Brothers, a distribution company that ships bulk food to schools and restaurants in the Midwest. Open enrollment is going on right now and they called me into the office to inform me of new policy changes. The HR manager told me they decreased the payout for life insurance from twice my years income ($82,000) to just one years income ($41,000). It's a decently dangerous job, one of my coworkers went to the ER to get stitches on his ankle literally yesterday. Also, right after my meeting I talked with another coworker that's been there for about 3 years and they said when they started the life insurance payout was +$100,000.
I'm not exactly planning on dying at work, but I thought that was a pretty bullshit thing to pull on us.

2021.12.03 06:19 DumbledoreCalrisian_ I think I've found the crux of the Type 4 dilemma

I've been in therapy for over 20 years. I've really tried to dig in to what has been at the root of all my suffering. When I discovered the Enneagram, and that I was a Type 4 (wing 5), it gave me a really important framework to understand and analyze my situation.
I came across the Enneagram about eight years ago. Since then, I've never stopped digging into the insights and wisdom the system provides. It seems almost bottomless.
After years and years of analysis and reflection, I think I'm finally starting to understand what is at the crux of the Type 4 dilemma. I could be wrong. Maybe I've only gained an understanding of my own dilemma. But given that the entire Enneagram system is built upon the idea of shared archetypal experiences and challenges within types and subtypes (wings, Hornevian groups, instinctual variants, etc.), I thought there might be a possibility that other Type 4s might find that parts of my analysis relate to them as well. And if there is even a slight possiblity that what I have to share might be useful to another person's healing and growth, I think it's worth sharing.
I wasn't really sure how to present my thoughts and analysis, but I decided to write them in the style of an open letter to all the Type 4s of the world. I would like to especially dedicated this letter to all those Type 4s out there who are constantly haunted by feelings of deep shame, inadequacy, and depression and haven't yet found the healing they are looking for. This is for you. I hope it helps:
Dear Type 4,
If there is one thing I want to share with you, it's this: despite your strong emotions, your sensitivity, your melancholy, your depression, your guilt, your shame, your fear, your anxieties, your feeling misunderstood, your feeling excluded, your loneliness, your longing, your self-consciousness, your brokenness, and your pain - you have a priceless, priceless gift: your incredible access to your intuition and the deep "knowing" wisdom deep inside you.
Being a type 4, you have likely dove to the very depths of your soul looking for yourself, looking for answers. And if you haven't, then let me reassure you that as a 4, you are more than equipped to do so. There's a lot down there, and we can often get wrapped up and tangled in so many traps and obstacles: fear, doubt, painful memories, old stories, our obsession with our self-image, unprocessed grief... all sorts of stuff.
But beyond all of that, is a deep knowing. It's always there, and it's always been there. Everytime you made a decision knowing it wasn't the right decision, it was there, whispering to you, "Don't do that. This is going to turn out badly." Every time you stayed in a relationship long after you knew it was over. Every time you betrayed yourself, it was there. But for whatever reason, you didn't listen. You continued to trust everything thing and everyone else but yourself.
You allowed yourself to be swayed by public opinion. You allowed yourself to be controlled by fear. You allowed yourself to value the acceptance of others more that your own acceptance of yourself. But you only allowed yourself to do these things because you were told, explicitly or implicitly, by someone important to you, that you were wrong. And I'm not talking about your opinions being wrong or your thoughts being wrong. I mean you. YOU were wrong, and everything ABOUT you was wrong.
Your thoughts were wrong, your feelings were wrong, your values were wrong, your interests were wrong, your perceptions were wrong, the way you saw the world was wrong, your desires were wrong, your curiosities were wrong, your joy was wrong, your sadness was wrong, your needs were wrong.... everything. You. Were. Wrong. Flawed, broken, wrong.
It didn't happen over night, but at some point you stopped trusting yourself. You stopped trusting your thoughts. You stopped trusting your feelings. You stopped trusting everything about you and suddenly you no longer belonged in your own skin. You no longer belonged in the world. You no longer felt connected. You no longer had a family. And you no longer had a home, even within yourself. And so you began to wander. Aimlessly. Restlessly, for all that seemed to be missing within you. You became an unwanted orphan, forever looking for someone to love you.
But it's all a lie. You "know." Deep down, you know, that you belong here. You know that all that's going on inside of you belongs here. You know that there is nothing wrong with your sadness. That there's nothing wrong with your emotions. That there's nothing wrong with the things that are important to you. That there's nothing wrong with your interests. That there's nothing wrong with what you value or what you find meaningful. You just know. You know it in your bones. You know it in your gut, even if it's just a whisper.
You know that all the parts of yourself - the good, the bad, and the ugly - belong in this world and belong within you. That being sad or scared is okay. That having emotions and dreams and fears is just a natural part of life and the human experience. You know such things should be embraced, explored, and welcomed. Not pushed away, judge, and rejected.
Yet you live in a world that hates to feel. You live in a world that, every single day, tells you that there is something wrong with you: your thoughts, your emotions, your body, your wants, your needs, your desires, your opinions, your interests, your values, your joy, your pain, your grief, your feelings, your everything. And, as a type 4, there was most likely someone, or multiple someones, who repeatedly communicated these messages to you over and over and over again. Maybe it was a parent or a sibling. Maybe it was a teacher or a minister. Maybe it was even the TV or social media. But after having it repeatedly drilled into your head, you eventually started to doubt yourself. You started actually considering the possibility that there was actually something wrong with you. That you didn't belong in your family. That you didn't belong in this society. That you didn't belong in this world. That you didn't belong at all. And that's when it all went wrong.
Maybe you've felt this way for a long time. You might even feel like you've always felt this way and that you can't remember a time when you felt differently. But I PROMISE YOU that you did not always feel this way. In fact, quite the opposite. You came into this world announcing your arrival. You came screaming your demands. You had not even a sliver of a doubt that you belonged here, that your needs were important, or that you deserved to be cared for. Before you could even speak or read or write, you KNEW that this world was made for you, and that you were made for it. Inseparably bonded. And no matter how much doubt or hopelessness or anxiety you might be feeling right now, that 'knowing you belong here' is still there. It's still there in your gut. It's still there in your body. It's still there in your toes. NOTHING can destroy it. I promise you. All you need to do is be silent and you can hear it, you can feel it. It's always there.
It might take you a while to find that part of yourself again, but as long as you keep trying, you'll eventually find it. Everyone finds it in there own unique way, but I've found that silence and coming into my body work the best for me. By silence, I mean you have to kind of let all the noise and distraction fall away. Not just external noise in the environment (cars, TVs, other people, etc.), but also all the internal noise as well. Thoughts, feelings, emotions... they can all pull you away from the deep "knowing". It's important not to push your thoughts or feelings away. You just need to realize that there's something deeper going on underneath all the mental and emotional noise. The noise isn't bad, it's just not the thing you're after.
One way of connecting is through the body. The thoughts in your head and the painful emotions that accompany them can easily spin you into a web of doubt, shame, hopelessness, and fear. You get lost in your thoughts and emotions and as long as you are lost in them, you are disconnected from the deep knowing. Your body on the other hand is always, at some level, connected with the knowing. The body is unique in that your thoughts can be completely disconnected from your "beingness" (for example, while daydreaming), but it's IMPOSSIBLE for your body to be disconnected from "beingness." Your body is a physical thing. It is made of matter and occupies space. It exists. It IS. It is "be-ing" and it is always "be-ing". As far as your body is concerned, it's here, so it belongs here. No matter what kind of lies your mind is spinning, your heart is still pumping, your lungs are still breathing, and your stomach is still digesting. From the moment you were born, your body has never NOT belonged here. In fact, it has no conception of what that even means. Just like a fish doesn't know what it's like to be out of water, your body doesn't know how to even consider that it might not belong here. It's just not possible. It doesn't have the capability to function in that way.
So whatever works for you to get in touch with this "deep knowing" - this soft and gentle whisper - you should try it. Just keep working with it every single day and after a while, you'll discover that the wisdom and groundedness flowing from this part of your being is endless. You'll start to trust yourself again. You'll start to know that there is nothing wrong with how you feel. That there is nothing wrong with how you think or what you value. It all belongs here. ALL OF YOU, belongs here. And suddenly, your thoughts are no longer problems, they're just thoughts. And your feelings are no longer problems, they're just feelings. And the thoughts of others are no longer problems, because they no longer have the power to make you feel "wrong" anymore, because you know so deeply that you belong here. That you truly belong here.
Eventually you may stop trying to gain the approval of others. Not that there is anything wrong with wanting the approval of others. It's only natural. You just realize it's just not the thing you actually need. It's like thinking you need more coffee when you are tired, when you actually just need sleep. Coffee may help you get through the day, but what you really need is rest, and no amount of coffee will ever satisfy your body's need for sleep. Likewise, no amount of approval from others will ever complete you. Only when you reconnect with your deepest being will you find peace and wholeness.
Other people caused you pain and made you start to doubt yourself and your worth, so it's only natural to think that they are the ones who can heal you. But what you lost and are trying to gain back is not their approval of you. What you actually lost and long for is a deep trust in yourself and feeling at home in the world and in your own mind, body, and soul. It's still there, I promise. In fact, it's probably been the only thing that has never left you in your entire life. And it never will.
I have no idea if any of this is helpful. I just felt some need to share this with you. I guess because I've been where you are. I've had debilitating depression and anxiety almost my entire life. But ever since I stopped listening to all the voices in my head, and all the opinions of others, and started focusing on that quiet little whisper deep down inside me, my life has completely changed.
Maybe what I've described does not resonate with you. Maybe it's an experience unique to me. But for whatever reason, I thought one of you out there might find it valuable. I really really hope you do. And if not, then completely forget everything I've just said. You know what you need and what is right for you far more than anything else.
In any case, don't give up my friend. As long as we are alive, healing is possible.

New student here. ~5 hours of flight time. are there any good tricks to reduce motion sickness? I’ve heard it gets better with time and experience but after working on power off stalls and steep turns in my last lesson I noticed by the end of the lesson I was getting pretty queasy. It was difficult for me to absorb new information on the last bit of the lesson. I must’ve been too focused on not losing my lunch.
Any little remedies or insight would be appreciated! i’ve tried drinking ginger ale just before my flight but it didn’t seem to help too much. maybe I should increase the airflow in the cockpit?
