2022.01.19 19:38 Dsg1695 Have been unemployed since Sep 21, how bad am I doing?

I own my condo, it can go on forbearance for up to 1 year. My car is paid off so I have insurance only, I was able to find cheaper auto and condo insurance. That way, my mortgage will be lower once it’s time to pay it again. Student loans on forbearance, HOA fees are being reduced to $100 per month until I can work again. I’m looking at about $400-$500 per month, including gas, dining out, home warranty etc. I was eligible for food stamps & electric assistance. I started off with around $5700 in my savings when I quit my last job & have around $4800 in my account atm. I have about 2k in credit card debt but try to make a little over the minimum monthly payment.

2022.01.19 19:38 Noor_Hyper Life has been feeling weird lately and I don’t know what to do

I’m a 14 year old boy, and I’m in year 9 (8th grade). People might say I’m too young to experience things like this, but I have no one to talk to or they’ll make fun of me or use it against me eventually.
Everyday life has been feeling boring and empty for no reason and I don’t know why. Nothing has been going my way either. My biggest struggle at the moment is probably academically. This creates two problems. One, I’m getting quite “bad” scores on my recent tests. No matter how hard I try or study I always mess up somehow with the questions and such, and when looking back I realise I knew everything. The other problem is my parents. They are very strict and often my mum asks me for my test results. When I tell her she obviously isn’t very proud. I get quite decent scores, but that isn’t enough to her. With my maths set,I know I don’t deserve to be put in this set and my teacher last year unfairly put me here. I try to move up as much as I can. I try my hardest each lesson and I’m confident I’m the smartest in the class yet my teacher refuses to move me up. In the uk, we start GCSEs in year 10, so if I don’t start getting perfect in my tests, then I’m not going to get a good set in year 10 and once you start GCSEs it is extremely hard to move up after that.
I also feel angry at everything everyday. Angry at everyone. Everything anyone says or does it just angers me for some reason. I always insult them in my mind, but I won’t say it to them, mostly with my friends. My friends are nice people and they care and trust me, and I could probably trust them if I needed to. Then I start to notice that they’re quite racist, especially to Indians, and they’re only way of being funny is making fun of others. That’s just not the type of guy I am. I used to laugh at it before to fit in, but I’ve stopped now and I try to give them the hint that their jokes just aren’t funny when they’re racist. It’s the same thing for me in general. Whatever I agree with someone will always disagree. Im forced to be two faced and I hate it
I’ve also been very paranoid just in general. I space out in class a lot and end up having no idea what to do for the task. I overthink for way too long. I struggle to pay attention and always have to ask people to repeat what they said. I feel very insecure and aren’t confident at all, always caring what people think of me and downplaying myself. I have big trust issues and can not trust anyone. It feels whenever I trust someone nothing good comes out of it. They just end up exposing my secrets or talking behind my back. My biggest problem is probably how I care about others way too much. Even if I’m shy and not very confident, I am way too nice to everyone and it is downgrading my success. When I provide them with equipment, they end up breaking it or damaging it. However, if I were in that position I would try my best to take care of it. Being respectful and kind is a good thing, but not when it is leading me away from my dreams. It just feels I care for people when they couldn’t care less about me. Like I would take a bullet for them but they won’t even let me borrow a pen I really need for a test?
This post is probably way too long and I have probably missed out a lot but I’m just explaining my main problems in detail. I am going to lead a better life from now on. I made this post to ask people for a staring point on how to follow my dreams. I have a very strong willpower, so I will go to any extent in order to reach success as long as it is reasonable. I have already started working out, and don’t intend to stop any time soon. All I’m asking is for some tips. I know a lot of the things I said probably contradicted each other as I’ve spent probably half an hour writing this and I’ll probably come back tomorrow to edit this post more, assuming anyone even cares that much. I’m not looking for attention, just asking for a starting point and some tips.
Thank you some much for your time and have a great day

2022.01.19 19:38 PremierBromanov It's time to ditch the subscription model

If you’re one of millions of people who have ever played WoW, you understand that the name of the game is time investment. You’re aware of the multitude of tiny time-eaters that are designed into the game (or neglected into the game). Quests are long and tedious, portals are not centralized, hearthstone has a cooldown, conduit energy stops you from changing playstyles, the total lack of ability to switch covenants at will (now fixed), the way each expansion’s armor system requires a grind, how every new content patch comes with some new system that requires days, even weeks, to grind to stay competitive.
A lot of these complaints may seem odd, since the things I’m complaining about are about as natural to WoW as white on snow. But they’re fundamentally designed to waste your time and therefore flawed.
You cannot have good design if the priority is bad. The priority here is to get you to waste time. The more time it takes you to do anything, the more money they make. Blizzard monetizes your time.
Now, we should stop here and recognize that spending time in an MMO isn’t an inherently bad thing. It’s good to spend time, you know, PLAYING THE GAME. Thorghast isn’t a bad mechanic. It’s a piece of content that can be fun to play through. Covenant abilities are fun as shit. When it requires time to achieve something, that makes that achievement worth that much more! When it takes a lot of effort to progress in a mythic raid, it feels amazing to win. When it takes a lot of time to become highly rated in PvP, that feels great too. I love the fact that there are people in WoW who are significantly better than me at something and are rewarded for their time and effort and skill. I love that, as a raider, I am achieving something pretty good with Ahead of the Curve achievement, something others don’t have. I also love the fact there are people out there collecting Cutting Edge, mythic boss mounts, cool ass weapons, and very strong gear, things I will never have. I think everyone likes the variability and contrast.
Gating the content to prevent the larger playerbase from being left in the dust by people who play 100 hours a week is a good thing . It keeps things aligned, and removes FOMO from WoW. Many subscription services do this. Disney releases episodes once a week, to give everyone time to catch up and talk and anticipate. And most importantly, time to create social media content. And it certainly helps that that one show took over a month to release fully, meaning they likely got 1 or 2 subscription costs out of you. WoW is the same. It is, sometimes, mutually beneficial to gate content.
So why is it wrong to monetize our time if spending time in the game is good?
Well, 9.1 is a great example. Lets think about what a person spends their money on in WoW. Primarily, it’s on the expansion pack and on the subscription. There are services you can buy, but largely these are not part of the problem and honestly probably more aligned with a solution. But lets talk about how blizzard primarily gets money from us and how that incentivizes them to develop the game.
When a new expansion comes out, it usually means a ton of new content. New art assets, new designs, new music, new worlds, etc. It’s understandably expensive to develop, and blizzard is rewarded by us buying their game. Same as any game on the planet, right? In addition to that, Blizzard has server costs, so we pay a subscription. But, let’s be honest, the cost of a subscription is an area of profit for blizzard. It’s the same subscription cost since 2005, and servers have only gotten better, cheaper per player, and easier to maintain. Inflation notwithstanding. What this means, then, is that the subscription is a significant portion of their revenue.
It also means that 9.1 cost all of us 9 months of subscriptions. The amount of content we got for 9 months of development is not nearly enough. Furthermore, the delay in releasing that content actively makes the game worse to play and hurts the player base. People stop playing when there isn’t enough new stuff to do. This is the same deal as Netflix, right? They create content to keep you strung along. You are paying not only for that content, but also for access to their entire catalog of content. But, it’s not really the same. When WoW has new content, it will necessarily take many subscriptions for me to actually experience all of the content they offer, whereas with Netflix and other shows, it could be anywhere from 2 to 10 hours, something someone could accidentally accomplish over a weekend.
The point is, the content takes many months to develop and is rewarded by us continuing to play the game. $135 is what many of us paid to play WoW during the time 9.1 was developed and released. Do I really need to spend $135 to get the next piece of content?
So here’s where the problem is. When our time is monetized, it incentivizes blizzard to take longer, it disincentivizes efficiency at a company level, and is bad for both Blizzard and their players. This is an archaic method of monetization that needs to end. Blizzard already knows this, they’ve added the in game shop and other ways to make money off of you. They also run 4 other games with completely different monetization techniques, some of which could really benefit WoW.
So lets take a look at a few examples. One big one for me is Path of Exile. For those un-aware, PoE is a free to own, free to play action RPG similar to Diablo 2 and 3. We neednt describe the gameplay, you can figure that out. The way GGG (the company) makes money is in a few different ways. Number one, they monetize quality of life features. Number two, they monetize cosmetics, and number three, development is funded by supporter packs, which include many of the things from 1 and 2 and also a few extra goodies.
PoE has a pretty quick development cycle. Every 4 to 6 months, they release a new “League”. This league offers a brand new way to play the same exact game. In order to play the same game in a new way, characters are basically flushed down the toilet and you begin anew. But, the ways in which you play can drastically change. The point is that whenever this new content comes out, it also comes with supporter packs. You can spend anywhere from $30 to $480 on a supporter pack to get not only the value of that pack in in-game currency, you also get exclusive cosmetics. You can also get physical items. Some of these things you get are important because they are an aspect of the experience blizzard can monetize and take notes on. You get cosmetics, avatar borders for in game, a load of cosmetic things to attach to your character (like transmog), cosmetic effects for spells, an avatar for the forums, a title for the forums, and some other little goodies like the soundtrack. Would encourage you to take a look at this madness for yourself: https://www.pathofexile.com/purchase. Nothing the players purchase benefit them in game, except the currency. The currency doesn’t make your player better, it just makes some large quality of life improvements by way of stash tabs. Your stash is where you put your items, it’s just like Diablo 2 in that a 2-h item can take up 6 or 8 slots because it’s “Big”, or a ring will take up just 1 because it’s “Small”. Without going into too much detail, I think it’s a common understanding of PoE that it is free to play, but you’re going to want to drop $20 to $30 on QoL improvements that are permanent for all time. Get those stash tabs, make your life easier.
Are you starting to see some parallels with WoW content here?
Let’s look at another example. Hearthstone.
Hearthstone recently changed their monetization technique, but it’s still the same cycle of creating new content and then getting paid for it. Hearthstone doesn’t make a dime if you play with the core set of cards for 12 months straight. They only make money on monetizing the content they put out. Every 4 months or so, like PoE, they create expansions. You can buy bundles, and those include a few cosmetic exclusives as well. But primarily, you need to buy packs to get the cards. You CAN grind for them, but who has the time? (there’s that word again). Furthermore, there’s a “Battle Pass” type of system that you can pay for every season. There’s a paid track and a free track. Obviously, the paid track is better, but for casual players the free track offers a trickle of rewards that make the game feel fun to play. Not only am I playing the game, I’m being rewarded! Yay, colors and numbers and stuff!! It sounds stupid, but then again we are lizard brained people and these types of things are exciting. Arena is actually a pay to play system. It costs $1.25 to get a key to the arena, but you can become self sustaining because you get rewards based on how good you were. Battlegrounds is 100% free, but if you have a pass you get twice as many heroes to roll on and some additional data tracking info that is fun to see.
So how is this different? Well, PoE and HS monetize two different things: The content itself and SAVING us time, rather than monetizing us spending more time. If blizzard wants you to throw down money on Hearthstone, they need to deliver content, and that content needs to be good enough for you to want to play it and spend money on the other stuff. When PoE devs want you to spend money, they need to deliver content, and that content needs to be good enough for you to spend money on the other stuff.
Both methods have their drawbacks. In PoE, they are incentivized to make things just a little bit frustrating so that you buy new stash tabs. They’re slightly monetizing inventory space (something WoW has and can monetize). In HS, they rely on what is essentially loot boxes (ie, gambling) for content.
However, a subscription is far worse. It is unacceptable to have a 9 month content drought and for that to be incentivized by blizzard making more money off of us the longer they wait. It doesn’t force them to be efficient. It incentivizes bad design, by making it take much much longer to do anything in game. Each quest in the game is riding the line of “too fucking frustrating to complete”. They want you to spend time doing the quest rather than have fun doing it. Just look at the Korthia lightning rod daily, holy shit. Whoever allowed that design to be released should really take a long hard look in the mirror. It’s awful, and it’s justified because it makes blizzard money when the quests are bad and long.
We need to incentivize other aspects of the game so that our time is respected, so that the design improves and the game is overall a more fun experience, and so the community can grow rather than hemorrhage.
What should we monetize? Well that’s an entirely different conversation, and one fraught with lots of opinions. But a few examples of some things I would personally be okay with monetizing.
Bag Space: I don’t care if I can pay $5 for a bigger bag, it’s a preferable alternative to forcing me to return to a vender every 5 minutes just so I can spend more time in the game. Korthia, I’m looking at you.
Transmogs: We already have exclusive mounts, I’m fine if you want to add exclusive transmog content. Blizzard is great at making this stuff, imagine if they were getting paid directly for it. I already pay $15 a month for this game, if I didn’t have to do that, I’d definitely spend $10 on “World’s coolest red spike” for my shoulders.
Experience and/or Heirlooms: Look, this stuff is already in the game. You can buy a character boost. I’d gladly pay for an additional XP boost or keep heirlooms behind a paywall if it was a cheaper alternative than buying a character at 50.
Covenant switching and other mechanics: Hey, if it cost me $5 to swap to a covenant but it didnt take me a week of grinding and I also wasn’t paying a monthly sub, I’d do it. No problem. If it cost me a secondary currency that I could grind, buy, or do like a battlepass thingy, I’d be fine with that. As long as it’s not Gold.
Paying for each new content patch: Hey, if Korthia and SoD cost me $15 to get, I’m fine with that. It’s a far far far cry from paying $135. Its fine if it means that 1) Blizzard comes out with more content more frequently and 2) that content is good and worth playing.
Cosmetic Spell effects: We had this with inscription, but I’m fine with exclusive spell effects that don’t give a drastic advantage in PvP. Let mages throw green fireballs if it’s worth $5. You can go REALLY far with this. Every class has something that could be visually changed for money. PoE does this a lot.
Custom Servers and events: If blizzard wants to let us pay for our own server, i’m not opposed. I probably wouldnt do it myself, but I’m not against it. If they want to run a monthly event that’s gated by money/secondary currency, I’d be fine paying into that to play it. Lets have an official, designed event to race to max level, I don’t care. It would be fun, it would be easy content, and it would fund other aspects of the game.
Anyway, that’s my 2 cents. Or, rather my 20 bucks because this thread is long as hell. I’d love to hear differing opinions on this. WoW is a game that services so many different types of players, even players who only pick flowers all day, so every voice matters.
tldr: WoW is designed to waste our time to buy more subscriptions. This is flawed and leads to content drought and poor design. We should ditch the sub model and monetize other things.

2022.01.19 19:38 jedaam Hair help!

Hello!
I have a question regarding hair
I'm trying to pull off this messy long hair look: refrence 1 refrence 2
i really like this guy's look
Anyways, when my hair is dry and brushed, it doesn't look like it's very dense or thick. It's hard to style, and it looks bad. But i can achieve the messy look when i just washed it and dried a bit with a towel. It does whatever i want, it's thick and all. Is there a way i can do this, with a hair product or anything like that, so it stays like this for the whole day or for a long time?
Thanks!

2022.01.19 19:38 jollyroger678 Advice for postbac research

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right sub to use for these questions! I’m about to finish up my junior year of my BS in chemistry and am starting to look into masters programs. Currently, I work in a synthetic organic research lab (1.5 years) and love my project, my PI, and my department. I am also now the head of my project since the grad student graduated. Originally, I was leaning towards staying at my university for my masters because of these reasons but after talking to a few professional chemists, they really recommend I look into other programs. Their reasonings were: to see how other labs operate, build skills not required in my current lab, and to seem more marketable when applying to jobs. I plan on going into industry.
My main problem is difficulty in researching programs and finding areas of research I’m interested in. My tactics thus far has been googling schools I know and looking at the faculty’s research. The brief, one paragraph description is usually difficult to decipher and I never get a good grasp of what they are researching. Looking through the professors published work is helpful and i try to do this also.
What I’m asking for is advice on how to look for new programs and getting a good idea of what the lab works on. Also if it would be worth it to stay at my current university based on comfortability. Thanks in advance!
