2022.01.17 13:19 Edymnion Food Needs an Overhaul

I'm sure something like this is buried on that gawd-awful (and currently closed) Discord suggestion channel, but I'm saying it here because one its closed and two trying to find anything to upvote over there is a nightmare.
I know we're still early access, so I'm hoping this is something that gets addressed, but...
The entire Food system really needs upgrading. I'll try to break this out into some readable chunks, as I've got multiple issues I'd like to see addressed.
Packaged Meals are too late in the research tree. Packaged Meals, the ones wrapped in cloth with a long shelf life? They're in the wrong place, research wise.
By the time you can make the full on stoves and research that deeply into the tree, you're going to have underground storage set up. If you're like me, you're going to have so much underground storage that the temperature even relatively shallow is going to be below the food spoilage limit.
Aka, your food already lasts forever by the time you get it, and you already have Luxurious Meals by that point so there is no reason to ever craft it.
This really needs to be one of the earliest things you learn to make, back when you're still storing your food above ground and having meals that don't spoil in a few days is still important.
Same issue exists for Pickled Vegetables. By the time you can make them, you no longer NEED them.
Animal Products. Already on the roadmap, but we definitely need things like chickens for eggs and meat, sheep for wool and meat, cows for milk (which could then be made into butter and cheese) and meat, etc.
Food variety needs to exist. Currently, there is no difference between surviving entirely on mushrooms, and having stockpiles full of every crop in existence.
We need a mechanic for food variety, not just in what we can make, but in overall number of different foods available giving benefits.
Settlers should be upset if they are forced to eat nothing but the same thing day in and day out. They should be happier overall if they have a wide choice of foods, and overall happier with higher quality of food of the same type.
I'd like to see a vastly expanded range of foodstuffs with different requirements. Porridge from barley, different types of stews that require different ingredients, etc. Which would also mean that we need to specifically have different crops planted to achieve that variety.
Also, we need some wheat to make freaking bread from!
More levels of production for food are needed. I for one would like to see more complex recipes that require multiple steps of preparation.
As in, I would like to see the ability to bake bread. And then we could have a recipe that requires Bread, Roasted Meat, Cheese, and Pickled Vegetables to make something like hamburgers (just to make something up, not suggesting we have actual hamburgers or pizza in a medieval setting).
As is, our basic stews and lavish meals don't care what ingredients they use as long as there is enough of them. Those lavish meals have a model showing meat and multiple veggies and what looks like a broth of some kind. Make those actual requirements to pre-make before you're allowed to have that huge of a moral boost!
Decrease harvests. Its so easy to over-produce food. The amount of farming plots you need to sustain relatively large numbers of settlers is surprisingly small. Even within just the first year or two I can easily have THOUSANDS of surplus raw foodstuffs while having 10+ people eating lavish meals every single day with just a dozen tiles of each crop type.
About the only thing I actually need large fields for are barley and flax, everything else only takes a tiny little field and I'm swimming in more food than I can actually eat.
Harvests either need to produce less per plot, or we need to be eating/using way more of it.
Scale down food power so that it can be slowly ramped back up. Pretty much any cooked meal is going to completely fill your settler up, no matter how hungry they are. Which means beyond the moral bonus of a lavish meal, there is no reason to care about what you make or who makes it. A Rank 1 cook's food is just as good as a Rank 50 cook's. A stew made of nothing but cabbages is just as filling as one made with a half dozen different ingredients.
To make the wider variety of recipes more mechanically appealing, I'd like to see how filling/nutritious they are have more levels of scaling, so that the more complicated recipes make more filling foods. Are you just boiling foraged mushrooms? Yeah, not very filling, you'll need to eat multiple times per day if thats all you got. Are you making that Lavish Meal that takes a half dozen ingredients, most of which themselves had to be processed from intermediaries? Then you can get that full day's feasting done in one sitting.
If everyone is having to eat 2-3x a day, this could also help alleviate the food over-abundance.
Restrict what you can cook based on skill level. We already do this on who can plant which crops with Botany or who can smith Mechanical Components, I'd like to see it applied to Cooking as well. Let the skill lvl 1 people only cook the most basic gruels, while the skill 50 people are making complex feasts fit for a king.
Possible fix for Packaged Meals Okay, now that the others are stated, I feel like they could combine into making Packaged Meals more useful without moving them in the research tree.
Give settlers an additional slot of inventory space specifically for packaged meals.
If settlers have to eat multiple times per day, then them constantly having to stop what they are doing to go back to the great hall (or wherever your eating happens at) is going to be disruptive to getting work done, obviously. But if you can make packaged meals that can be easily carried, then they could stop and eat out in the field if they have it.
Suddenly the relatively high cost of a packaged meal (the food and the cloth) is more reasonable because you're saving a potentially hours long round trip back to have lunch.
Let us put food on tables. We currently get a bonus for eating at a table. What I'd like to see is something we can place on top of a table that acts like a stockpile or shelf but for only a single meal, and make that a requirement for getting that bonus.
This would also help with making the Packaged Meals more useful. If we could put a plate on a table in our bedroom/house, and then supply it with a single packaged meal, then when someone is Convalescing they could just eat right there at home instead of hauling their crippled selves across town to the main hall.
Sure, we could put a full on shelf in there and fill it with packaged meals, but the volume there would be overkill. We don't need 75 packaged meals slowly rotting in houses that don't get eaten except in emergencies, but having a single serving that could be rotated out from the frozen stockpiles? That would be useful!
We need more food related rooms. We currently have a Kitchen. Thats it. We need more rooms in general (and I'm sure they'll get around to that), but specifically for this post I would want to see more food related rooms.
Give us wheat for making bread and deserts, and then let us make a Bakery. Would act like a Kitchen, but the speed boosts would be specifically for making anything bread related.
Give us a few room levels between generic "ate at a table" and "ate in a Great Hall". How about a Dining Hall at the very least as an in-between?
Also, lets re-configure what it takes to make the Kitchen. If we have multiple food prep rooms, we would likely have something like a Butcher Shop for preparing our meat, so don't need that in the Kitchen anymore. And we can make the room requirements a little more complicated. Maybe a Kitchen requires a Hearth, Shelves x2, Wall Pottery x2, and a Stool?
Add some more decorative items, like sacks, and we can use those to help differentiate a Bakery from a generic Kitchen (Bakery has sacks of flour in it, Kitchen doesn't?).
Like I already make a dedicated Pickling Room with two hearths and a brewing station to churn out the vinegar and pickled veggies in one spot, it would be nice to have it recognized as a legit room to speed that process up some.
Add a negative modifier for cold food. Currently I could just set the kitchen to make Lavish Meals forever, put them all in cold storage, and have it last until the end of time. Settlers would go in, get it, and be perfectly happy eating a meal that is frozen solid.
I'd like to see a reason to put food spoilage back in the game, or at least enough to justify having stored anywhere but in the depths of the icebox. If food has a modifier on it for being Hot/Room Temp/Cold, and the modifier to mood altered a little extra to be based on that, I think that would add some nice complexity to the food game.
If food was cooked within the last hour or two, make it Hot. If its been in cold storage, make it Cold. Otherwise, Room Temperature. Make food have to sit out for an hour or two to defrost before people eat it, or else they get surly. Heck, maybe you need to defrost your food before cooking it!
For the love of god, EAT THE OLD FOOD FIRST!!! My god, I don't know how many times this happens to me, but its a lot. Some small number of meals doesn't get eaten and starts losing freshness (because I'm weird and like putting a shelf of meals in my great hall instead of leaving all of it in cold storage 24/7), and the damned settlers always pick the newest stuff to eat, so perfectly good food rots on the shelf due to no one eating it.
Give us some kind of way (either automatically or via a preference setting) to tell our people to eat/cook the oldest/least fresh food FIRST.
For cooking, I get around this by having the shelves closest to the door be reserved for food with less than 50% hitpoints so they grab it first, and full HP food in the back, but again by the time I get everything set up my cold storage is so cold nothing decays at all anymore so it doesn't really matter. But for early on? God yes, EAT THE OLD STUFF BEFORE GETTING THE NEW STUFF!

used to eat cereal, and lots of fruits and vegetables, over the past 5 months I kind of just stopped, I've been eating eggs, bagel, sandwich, coffee, and chicken and rice basically everyday. The thing is I have noticed that my poop health has not been good so I want to get back into eating fiber, I ate cereal, an apple, a pear, a coffee, a fiber bar, and a muffin and I had to poop a lot, could this be because I ate a bunch of fiber when I haven't eaten a lot in awhile, or could it of been the cereal

2022.01.17 13:19 babyaccount1101 Help with boy #2 🥰

Hello! I’m having boy number 2, and I’d love a little help brainstorming. I’m thrilled we are having another boy, but I only had good girl names picked out. This is our last baby, and my spouse has given me full decision making authority 😁
Some notes: - brother’s name is Callum, goes by Cal - very strong/masc last name - we don’t love biblical names or ultra trendy names. - only looking for first name
So far, I like Connor (but it’s a little matchy-matchy with Callum?) or Marshall.
Got anything for me? Thank you!
